CATTLE – Prices for both fed cattle and beef were in a downward trend in late February. In addition to the high supply of ready-to-slaughter animals, the limited demand from meatpackers also influenced price drops.
The CEPEA/B3 Index for fed cattle (São Paulo State) decreased 3.92% in February, closing at BRL 235.40 per arroba. In the same period, beef carcass values dropped 2%, at BRL 16.48 per kilo in the wholesale market of the Greater SP.
The beef production hit a record last year, which explains the downward trend for both fed cattle and beef in the wholesale market during 2023. The total produced was 8.91 million tons, 11.2% up than in 2022 and 8.6% compared to the previous record, in 2019, according to data from the IBGE.
The beef volume increased by 900 thousand tons in relation to 2022, while exports rose only by 22.8 thousand tons, to 2.29 million tons – it has absorbed 25.7% of the national production. The surplus was allocated to the domestic market, leading to a price decrease. In 2023, the CEPEA/B3 Index for fed cattle (São Paulo state) downed 12%, and special beef carcass prices dropped circa 9% in the wholesale market of the Greater SP.
SWINE – Live pig quotations rose steeply in early February; however, this scenario was not enough to boost the monthly average compared to January, since price drops registered in this second fortnight were more significant.
Players surveyed by Cepea say that the number of ready-to-slaughter animals is high. This fact and the lower demand for pork meat, especially in the end-of-the-month period, pressed down values of live pigs.
In the SP-5 region (Bragança Paulista, Campinas, Piracicaba, São Paulo and Sorocaba), the average price for live pigs moved down 0.3% from January to February, closing at BRL 6.64/kg. As for the meat, prices for special pork carcass decreased 0.9% in the same comparison, averaging BRL 9.64/kg in the wholesale market of the Greater São Paulo.
POULTRY – Despite the low demand in February, values of many chicken products increased compared to January. Price rises are related to the good pace of chicken meat exports, since this scenario helped to reduce the domestic supply.
The average price for whole chilled chicken rose 2.4% from January to February in the wholesale market of the Greater São Paulo, to close at BRL 7.20/kg this month. For the frozen product, values increased 2.7% in the same period, to BRL 7.23/kg.
Concerning live animals, despite price increases in the first fortnight of February, the monthly average was still lower than in January, due to the low liquidity in the domestic market.
The daily average of chicken meat shipments was 20.7 thousand tons in the first 15 days of February, moving up 21.3% compared to the first month of the year, according to data from Secex. Brazil exported 311 thousand tons of in natura chicken meat in the period, against 353.4 thousand tons in February last year.
