Cepea, February 19, 2024 – Sales of hydrous ethanol by mills in São Paulo finished January at the biggest amount for both the 2023/24 season and since October/20. Compared to December/23, the increase was 35% and in relation to January/23, the volume rose almost three times – data from Cepea. It is worth noting that January usually registers low consumption.
However, the volume of ethanol trades closed in the days prior to carnaval (February 12 and 13) was small in the Central-Southern area. This behavior was already expected by players, given that anticipated deals were closed in previous weeks. As a result, distributors remained focused on obtaining the product that had been bought before.
As for prices, between February 5 and 9, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.1650/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), downing only 0.48% compared to that in the previous week. For anhydrous ethanol, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at BRL 2.4467/liter, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins), 3.26% up in the same comparison.
The biofuel advantage in the retail market resulted in good sales, which sustained ethanol prices in mid-February. Moreover, deals closed in previous weeks led sellers to be on a more comfortable situation, being firm regarding values. Considering the demand, some distributors were less active, given the current high volumes available at tanks.
