Cepea, July 2, 2024 – Cepea surveys show that the price of the milk produced in May closed at BRL 2.7114/liter on the “Brazil Average”, moving up 9.8% compared to that in April – it is the seventh consecutive month of rises. Values have accumulated an increase of 30.4% in real terms (values were deflated by the IPCA-May/24) since January. Still, the price average in May is 4.82% smaller than that observed in the same month last year, in real terms.
The upward trend is explained by the limited production. The Cepea Milk Production Index (ICAP-L) rose 0.14% from April to May, but dropped 7.7% in the accumulated of 2024.
In addition to lower investments in late 2023, the offseason period in the Southeast and in the Central-West and the delay of the season in the South are limiting the raw milk supply. As a consequence, the competition between dairy companies and cooperatives for suppliers sustained price rises. It is worth noting that the impacts of floods in Rio Grande do Sul on the dairy production in the state and the demand increase due to donations to RS create speculation and boost uncertainties.
IMPORTS – Data from Secex indicate that purchases dropped 23.6% in May, totaling 150 million liters, downing 28% in relation to May/23. From January to May, imports totaled 923 million liters, 5.1% more than in the same period last year.
