Cepea, June 4, 2024 – Sales of hydrous ethanol in São Paulo state continued to move at a good pace in May, for the third month in a row. The good advantage of ethanol against gasoline at pumps has reinforced this performance.
In spite of the firm demand, biofuel values dropped in May, influenced by the good production of ethanol at mills in May. Considering the full weeks of May, the average of the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.3147/liter, for a decrease of 2.01% compared to April. As for anhydrous ethanol (sales in the spot market only), the average closed at BRL 2.6489/liter, downing 1.71% in the same comparison.
In late May, specifically, quotations resumed moving up in the spot market of São Paulo state. The holiday of Corpus Christi on May 30 in Brazil and the firm behavior of sellers boosted the pace of trades.
Between May 27 and 31, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.3076/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), for an increase of 2.41% compared to that in the previous week. Concerning anhydrous ethanol, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at BRL 2.6227/liter, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins) from May 24-31, stable (-0.02%) in the same period.
