Cepea, May 6, 2024 – The CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol downed again in São Paulo, after five weeks of increases. Price drops are linked to the supply increase in the spot market. In addition to the normalization of crushing activities and the return of the industrial activity, some mills needed to close new deals.
Purchasers closed trades involving bigger volumes. Some weeks ago, the participation of distributors in the market was less significant, due to the expectation of price drops because of the progress of crushing activities.
The total of hydrous ethanol traded resumed increasing from April 22 to 26 compared to the previous period (+82%). In the accumulated of April, volumes traded have already surpassed those registered in March, despite the slight competitiveness loss of ethanol against gasoline at pumps in SP (it changed from 61% to 64%, according to data from ANP).
Between April 22 and 26, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.2981/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), downing 6.42% compared to that in the previous week. Concerning anhydrous ethanol, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at BRL 2.7175/liter, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins), for a decrease of 1.35% in the same period.
Data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) show that in São Paulo, between April 21 and 27, hydrous ethanol quotes averaged 3.70 BRL per liter, accounting for 65.5% of gasoline prices (5.65 BRL per liter).
