Cepea, April 17, 2024 – The price average for crystal sugar remained firm in early April in the spot market of São Paulo state. From April 8-12, the weekly average of the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for white crystal sugar was BRL 146.79 per 50-kilo bag, for an increase of 0.36% compared to the previous week (BRL 146.26 per bag).
The number of mills producing crystal sugar with the cane of the new season (2024/25) was still small in early April. As a result, the volume available for prompt-delivery sales has not been enough to press down quotations.
International values for demerara sugar, in turn, dropped at the beginning of the month, leading domestic sales to regain advantage over exports. Between April 8 and 12, Cepea calculations show that the weekly average of the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for white crystal sugar (Icumsa 130-180) closed at BRL 146.79 per 50-kilo bag, while the average of the May/24 contract at ICE Futures closed at 140.02 BRL per bag. Thus, sales in the spot market of SP remunerated 4.83% more than exports did. This figure considered weekly averages at USD 65.79 per ton of freight and charges, USD 113.17 per ton for quality premium and dollar at BRL 5.066.
Brazilian sugar shipments continue to move at a good pace. In the first week of April, sales rose 142% compared to the first month of the season before, according to data from Secex.
