Cepea, April 3, 2024 – Robusta coffee prices have been in an upward trend since the last quarter of 2023. On March 27, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the robusta type 6 closed at BRL 955.19 per 60-kilo bag, the highest of Cepea series (which has started in November 2001), in real terms – values were deflated by the IGP-DI February/24. In March, the Index rose 13.28%.
Robusta coffee prices have been boosted mainly by the higher international demand. Purchasers have been demanding the product from Brazil due to difficulties related to the production and to the flow of the crop from Vietnam, which is the biggest robusta producer in the world. Moreover, Indonesia, the third biggest robusta producer, has also been facing crop difficulties.
Data from Cecafé indicate that robusta shipments totaled 1.03 million bags in January and February 2024, six times more than the volume exported in the same period last year.
ARABICA – Prices have been relatively stable during 2024. In March, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for the arabica coffee type 6 was at around BRL 1,000 per 60-kilo bag. On March 28, it closed at 1,029.67 per 60-kilo bag on March 28, upping 2.22% in relation to February 29.
CROPS – The good volume of rainfall in coffee producing areas in Brazil has been favoring crops. Players surveyed by Cepea indicate that rains may help the grain filling in late crops and favor the fertilizing, since the soil moist helps the absorption of nutrients.
