Cepea, May 16, 2024 – Ethanol prices upped in early May in the market of São Paulo state, despite the progress of the 2024/25 season. In addition to the firm behavior of sellers, distributors remain purchasing significant volumes.
Between May 6 and 10, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.3496/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), for an increase of 0.32% compared to that in the previous week. Concerning anhydrous ethanol, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at BRL 2.6887/liter, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins) from May 6-10, moving up 1.35% in the same period.
In general, mills are at the beginning of crushing activities – as they advance, prices are likely to move down.
The volume of hydrous ethanol traded in early May continued high for the third period in a row. This is linked to the good competitiveness of the biofuel against gasoline (below 70%) at pumps.
MARKET IN APRIL – In April, the first official month of the 2024/25 season, prices for both hydrous and anhydrous ethanol rose steeply in the spot market in São Paulo, due to the low supply.
Considering the full weeks of April, the average of the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.3621/liter, 10.1% up compared to the previous period. As for anhydrous ethanol (sales in the spot market only), the average closed at BRL 2.6951/liter, for an increase of 12.3%.
Cepea calculations indicate that, despite the significant increase in April, price indexes for anhydrous and hydrous ethanol were still 15.4% and 16.7% lower than those in April/23, respectively, in real terms (IGP-M April/24).
