CATTLE – The moment is favorable for purchasers of calf and lean cattle. In the months of May, June and July, the calf weight is higher, and calf prices have been in a downward trend over the last years. In Mato Grosso do Sul, data from Cepea indicate that the average calf weight was 208 kilos in April, for an increase of 16.5% compared to that in April 2000.
The trend of weight increase has been consistent. The average in the last decade (from 2015 to 2024), for instance, is 201 kilos per animal, with the minimum of 174 kg in December/19 and the maximum of 230 kg in July/22, when calf prices were at around BRL 2,700 in Mato Grosso do Sul. In 2023, the average calf weight in MS was 207 kg, with the minimum of 200 kg in November and the maximum of 213 kg in May and June. In the four first months of 2024, the average weight was 206 kilos.
The weight has been stable even with calf prices in MS moving down to the levels of BRL 2,000 and BRL 2,100. Lean cattle values (approximately 13 arrobas), in turn, have been at around BRL 3,000 in most important feedlot regions. In the first four months of the year, the price average for male animals older than 18 months dropped 6%.
BEEF EXPORTS – The daily average of Brazilian beef shipments in April (up to April 19) surpassed 10 thousand tons, totaling more than 155 thousand tons in April, which would already represent the second best month of April in history.
SWINE – The price trends for live hogs in the independent market have been different among regions surveyed by Cepea in late April, interrupting the downward trend that had been verified since the second fortnight of this month.
In Patos de Minas (Minas Gerais state), values rose 2% comparing April 22 and 29, to close at BRL 6.34 per kilo on April 29. Purchasers were willing to trade new batches, and this firm demand boosted quotations.
However, prices dropped in other areas, due to the pressure from purchasers, who reduced the number of deals. In the SP-5 region (Bragança Paulista, Campinas, Piracicaba, São Paulo and Sorocaba), quotations decreased 1.2% between April 22 and 29, closing at BRL 5.78/kg.
EXPORTS – The daily average of the in natura pork meat shipped in the partial of April (20 working days) is at 4.3 thousand tons, 10.1% higher than in March (3.9 thousand tons), but dropping 16% in relation to the 5.2 thousand tons verified in April/23 – it is worth noting that exports were presenting a record performance one year ago.
POULTRY – Prices of chicken products researched by Cepea decreased from March to April. This scenario was verified in almost all regions surveyed by Cepea, except in Toledo (Paraná), and it is linked to the combination of low demand and high supply in the period.
Prices for the whole chilled chicken in the Greater São Paulo moved down 1.9% in April compared to March, averaging BRL 6.86/kg. As for the frozen product, the decrease was 2.2% in the same period, at BRL 6.87/kg last month. The higher supply of the chicken meat influenced the downward trend.
In Toledo (Paraná state), on the other hand, quotations for the whole chilled chicken rose 2.3% from one month to another, to close at BRL 9.16/kg. Concerning the whole frozen chicken, the increase was 2.1% compared to March, at BRL 8.92/kg in April. In this case, the firm demand and the higher liquidity allowed players to make positive adjustments in prices.
SHIPMENTS – In 20 working days of April, exports of in natura chicken meat totaled 421.6 thousand tons, moving up 7.7% compared to March and 3% against April/23, according to data from Secex.
