Cepea, April 17, 2024 – Ethanol prices rose in the first week of the new season (2024/25) in the spot market of São Paulo state – crushing activities have started officially on April 1st. Sellers were firm regarding values. The ethanol production was still low in São Paulo at the beginning of the month, due to rains in some regions and to the focus on producing sugar. Despite the supply from other states in SP, the total availability has not been significant.
Between April 8 and 12, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.3701/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), 1.09% up compared to that in the previous week. Concerning anhydrous ethanol, prices rose in the first week of the month, but dropped in the second. The CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at BRL 2.6458/liter, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins), downing 2.16% in the same period.
The volume of hydrous ethanol traded by mills in São Paulo state between April 8 and 12 was the second highest of this year – the first one was verified in the week finished on January 19. Compared to the same period in 2023, the amount traded by mills in SP increased more than three times. This scenario is linked to the good parity between prices of hydrous ethanol and gasoline at pumps. The advantage in the retail market has increased the need to purchase.
