Cepea, April 3, 2024 – The demand for hydrous ethanol increased in the last months of the 2023/24 season in São Paulo state, due to the advantage of the biofuel at gas stations. In spite of that, average prices for both hydrous and anhydrous ethanol in the 2023/24 season (from April/23 to March/24) were still below those observed in previous crops, in real terms – IPG-M March.
Between April last year and March/24, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol averaged BRL 2.2397 per liter, downing 17.5% compared to the previous season (2022/23) and 30% in relation to 2021/22. As for anhydrous (both spot and contracts), the Index averaged BRL 2.5630/liter, decreases of 17.2% and almost 30% in the same comparisons. In the 2022/23 crop, price averages were BRL 2.7134/liter for hydrous and BRL 3.0948/liter for anhydrous (in real terms), and, in the 2021/22 season, BRL 3.1958/liter and BRL 3.617/liter, respectively.
Considering the full weeks of March 2024, the average of the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.1453/liter, 0.24% up compared to the previous month. As for anhydrous ethanol (sales in the spot market only), the average closed at BRL 2.4001/liter, practically stable (-0.07%) in the same comparison.
The total of hydrous ethanol traded by mills in São Paulo from April/23 to March/24 increased 24% compared to the previous season.
