Cepea, March 18, 2024 – High stocks in part of mills in São Paulo state and the fact that some units have already started sugarcane crushing activities of the 2024/25 season (in advance) have led sellers to accelerate the pace of trades, especially of hydrous ethanol. The higher supply, in turn, pressed quotations down in mid-March.
Cepea data show that the volume of hydrous ethanol traded by mills in São Paulo increased 75% from March 4-8 compared to the week before. In the accumulated of the 2023/24 crop (from April/23 to February 16, 2024), the ethanol production from the Central-Southern area in Brazil rose 15.5% in relation to the same period of the previous season, according to data from Unica.
Between March 4 and 8, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.0706/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), for a decrease of 2.43% compared to that in the previous week. For anhydrous ethanol, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at BRL 2.3596/liter, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins), downing 1.68% in the same comparison.
Data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) show that in São Paulo state, between March 3 and 9, ethanol quotes averaged 3.42 BRL per liter, amounting for 61% of gasoline prices (5.61 BRL per liter).
