Cepea, March 4, 2024 – The volume of ethanol traded in the spot market in São Paulo state was high at the end of February. Data from Cepea say that the amount of hydrous ethanol traded by mills in SP increased 54.5% between February 19 and 26 compared to the period before. This scenario was verified even with the fact that the 2023/24 offseason period is close to the end and it is related to the firm pace of sales since the second semester in 2023 in major consuming states.
Players of some distributors were active in acquisitions in late February. Sellers, in turn, continued firm regarding prices, since they are away from trades at this moment of end of the season – sales were intense in January and the demand at gas pumps is firm.
Data collected by Cepea indicate that industrial activities of the 2024/25 season are likely to start in March in some units in São Paulo state and they may intensify in April, month that officially starts the new season in the Central-South.
Between February 19 and 23, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol closed at BRL 2.1438/liter (net of ICMS and PIS/Cofins), 0.66% up compared to that in the previous week. For anhydrous ethanol, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index closed at BRL 2.3701/liter, net of taxes (PIS/Cofins), moving down 0.84% in the same comparison.
Data from Unica indicate that hydrous ethanol sales totaled 1.77 billion liters in January, 75.6% up compared to the same month last year. As for anhydrous ethanol, trades totaled 1.03 billion liters, for an increase of 6.84% in the same comparison. As a result, the total sold in the domestic market surpassed 2.8 billion liters in January, the biggest monthly volume since October/19.
