Cepea, February 5, 2024 – Cotton quotations oscillated in January; however, price drops prevailed, despite the offseason period. Players from the industry have already returned to trade, offering lower values and/or they have not been approving the quality of batches. Some purchasers with immediate needs have been accepting to pay higher prices. As for sellers, players who need to make cash flow offer the product at lower values.
Comparing December 28, 2023, and January 31, 2024, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for cotton dropped 0.32%, closing at BRL 3.9874/pound on Jan. 31.
EXPORTS – International price rises and the high demand to import have been leading players to focus on trades to the international market, mainly in the second fortnight of January.
TRADES – According to data released on January 22 by Imea, 81.53% of the 2022/23 season had been traded in Mato Grosso, the biggest producer in Brazil.
SHIPMENTS – Up to the fourth week of January, according to data from Secex, Brazil has exported 240.4 thousand tons of cotton, 93.9% more than the total verified in January/23 and the third biggest volume shipped considering the months of January.
